Controller

Slang

New York, New York, United States

What your experience will be

As our Controller, you will own the day-to-day accounting function and serve as the right-hand accounting leader to the Head of Finance. This role is the head of accounting at Slang AI—responsible for the integrity of our books, the rhythm of our close, and the readiness of our financials for internal and external stakeholders.

You will lead Slang's first-ever third-party audit from end-to-end, build the controls and processes that will survive scrutiny, and design an accounting operation capable of closing the books faster—with the ambition of a near-daily close. You will own revenue accounting under ASC 606, expense accounting, accruals, cost classification, software capitalization, and the controls environment that holds it all together.

You will report to the Head of Finance and manage a Sr. Accountant (who owns month-end close, commission calculations, and accounting compliance), as well as a remote offshore team supporting SOP-driven work across HubSpot, Rippling, Invoice Butler, and other administrative systems. This role has the mandate to hire and mentor additional accounting talent as the function scales, including the planned Assistant Controller hire.

This is a hybrid role based in the NYC area, with a 3 days per week in our Financial District office (T,W,Th).

Why you belong here and how you will grow

You'll join a finance organization that values clarity over complexity, process over heroics, and judgment over activity. Belonging here means being trusted to design the accounting infrastructure the company will run on—and being empowered to push back when something doesn't tie out.

You'll grow through:

  • Direct exposure to company-level financial strategy and executive decision-making
  • Owning the first audit from the ground up—a once-in-a-company-lifecycle opportunity
  • Leading a full ERP migration off QuickBooks Online and into a modern close-focused platform like Rillet
  • Building an AI-augmented accounting function from first principles
  • Developing and mentoring a growing accounting team

This role supports your growth as both a technical accounting leader and a people manager, strengthening your ability to build systems that compound over time.

What success looks like

Own the Close & Financial Reporting

  • Own the end-to-end month-end close, driving accuracy, timeliness, and continuous improvement
  • Drive the close calendar from monthly toward a faster cadence—with an ambition toward a near-daily close
  • Own technical accounting positions, memos, and policies across ASC 606 (revenue), ASC 350-40 (software capitalization), and ASC 718 (stock comp)
  • Prepare GAAP financial statements and supporting schedules for leadership, the Board, and external stakeholders

Lead the First Audit & Build Controls

  • Lead Slang's first third-party audit end-to-end—planning, PBC management, auditor relationship, and resolution of findings
  • Design and implement the internal controls environment—segregation of duties, approval thresholds, documentation standards
  • Proactively identify and remediate audit risk areas, especially revenue recognition, software capitalization, stock comp, and accruals
  • Build the muscle to pass future audits faster and more cheaply every year

Modernize the Tech Stack

  • Lead the migration from QuickBooks Online to a modern ERP (Rillet or similar) designed for speed and automation
  • Integrate the accounting stack across Rippling (payroll, T&E, vendor spend), CommerceHub (quote-to-cash), Invoice Butler (collections), and HubSpot
  • Deploy AI and LLMs to accelerate the close, anomaly detection, account reconciliations, flux analysis, and memo drafting
  • Treat the accounting operation as a system—not a series of spreadsheets

Revenue, Quote-to-Cash & Collections

  • Own revenue accounting under ASC 606, including contract review, performance obligations, deferred revenue, and revenue recognition logic
  • Oversee the quote-to-cash process run through CommerceHub with third-party and offshore accounting support
  • Manage escalations from Invoice Butler (collections partner) and ensure the AR aging is healthy
  • Partner with Sales and Customer Experience to resolve billing disputes and improve invoice accuracy

Cost Controls & Vendor Spend

  • Design and enforce vendor spend and T&E policies—building controls into Rippling and approval workflows
  • Partner with the Head of Finance on budget enforcement, accrual quality, and P&L discipline
  • Build reporting that gives department leaders visibility into their spend in real time
  • Classify costs correctly across COGS, R&D, S&M, and G&A—with a particular eye toward software capitalization decisions

Tax, Payroll & Compliance

  • Own the relationship with external tax providers, ensuring timely and accurate federal, state, and sales tax compliance
  • Oversee payroll accounting via Rippling, including commissions, bonuses, and equity-related payroll implications
  • Manage equity and cap table accounting (ASC 718), including stock compensation expense and reconciliation with the cap table of record
  • Execute against the cash management plan set by the Head of Finance

Lead the Accounting Team

  • Manage and develop Shreya Menon as the core in-house accountant
  • Manage the offshore accounting team—designing SOPs, QA processes, and escalation paths for administrative work in HubSpot, Rippling, and Invoice Butler
  • Hire and mentor future accounting talent, including the planned Assistant Controller
  • Coach the team on AI-augmented workflows and process discipline

What you will bring

  • Active or inactive CPA license
  • 5–10 years of progressive corporate accounting experience at early-stage, venture-backed startups (required)
  • Public accounting experience (Big 4 or mid-tier audit background required)
  • Proven track record of successfully running an external audit process from end-to-end
  • Deep expertise in GAAP revenue accounting and ASC 606
  • Hands-on mastery of month-end close, including accruals, reconciliations, and flux analysis
  • Software capitalization accounting (ASC 350-40) experience
  • Process and internal controls design experience
  • People management experience—including managing in-house staff and offshore teams
  • Hands-on experience with Rippling (payroll, T&E, vendor spend)
  • AI-forward mindset: actively using or piloting LLMs to accelerate accounting workflows
  • Equity and cap table accounting knowledge (ASC 718)
  • Bias toward automation, clarity, and leverage

Overview

We're looking for a Data Analytics Engineer to join our data team and help build and scale our analytics infrastructure from ingestion to dashboard. You'll build and maintain the pipelines, transformations, and reporting layers that the rest of the company relies on to understand our product, our customers, and our business. This role sits at the intersection of data engineering and BI analytics, and the right person will be equally comfortable writing complex SQL transformations and presenting a clean dashboard to stakeholders.

You'll work closely with product engineering to instrument new features, maintain the business logic behind our core metrics, and keep our data warehouse performant and cost-efficient. There's also real opportunity to push into real-time data infrastructure as the platform evolves, including streaming pipelines and event-driven metric delivery for production services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain analytics pipelines in BigQuery using dbt Cloud, including staging, transformation, and mart layers
  • Manage and configure Airbyte ingestion streams and Hightouch reverse ETL syncs
  • Partner with product engineering to ensure new features follow our event-driven instrumentation methodology and emit the right data from day one
  • Define and maintain business logic for metrics construction, serving as the source of truth for how key metrics are calculated
  • Build, update, and maintain internal dashboards in Looker Studio
  • Build and maintain BigQuery datasets, views, and scheduled queries
  • Monitor and optimize query performance and warehouse costs, proactively identifying opportunities to reduce spend
  • Design and implement data backup and redundancy strategies
  • Make occasional updates to the customer-facing dashboard layer in the product (TypeScript)
  • Perform ad-hoc data analysis and produce one-off data pulls for customers as needed
  • Identify recurring data requests and build automated, self-serve solutions to replace manual fulfillment
  • Investigate BigQuery continuous queries for publishing metrics to Cloud Pub/Sub, enabling product engineering services to consume analytics data in near real-time
  • Evaluate Cloud Dataflow for real-time and low-latency data processing use cases as the platform's needs evolve

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, BI analytics, or software engineering
  • Expert-level SQL skills, particularly in BigQuery or comparable cloud data warehouses
  • Hands-on experience with dbt (dbt Cloud preferred) for managing transformation pipelines
  • Experience with data ingestion tools such as Airbyte, Fivetran, or similar
  • Experience with reverse ETL tools such as Hightouch or Census
  • Working knowledge of Python for data scripting, automation, and ad hoc analysis
  • Experience building and maintaining dashboards in Looker Studio or similar BI tools
  • Strong understanding of event-driven data instrumentation and how analytics contracts should be defined alongside product features
  • Track record of optimizing data warehouse costs and query performance
  • Comfort working directly with engineering teams to define data requirements and instrumentation standards

Nice to Haves

  • Experience with GCP data services beyond BigQuery (Cloud Dataflow, Pub/Sub, Cloud Functions)
  • Familiarity with TypeScript or Kotlin
  • Experience building or contributing to customer-facing analytics features within a product
  • Prior work with streaming or real-time data architectures
  • Experience implementing data quality testing frameworks (e.g., dbt tests, Great Expectations, or similar)
  • Familiarity with data governance practices, including documentation, lineage tracking, and access controls
  • Experience working at a fast-growing startup where you owned the data stack end to end
